GTA 4 Remaster Reportedly in Development, Could Launch by 2025
A remastered version of Grand Theft Auto IV might be on the horizon, according to well-known GTA leaker Tez2. In a recent post on the GTA Forums, the insider revealed that Rockstar Games could be actively working on a modern port of GTA 4, with a potential release by the end of 2025.
Although Rockstar hasn’t officially confirmed the remaster, mounting speculation points to the return of Niko Bellic’s gritty journey through Liberty City.
What the Leak Says
Tez2, a respected voice in the Rockstar community, shared the following update:
“Someone at R hinted at the IV port, and by now it should’ve gone up a year in development. We may end up seeing it drop later this year. And it’s one more reason, in addition to existing reasons, the LCPP mod was taken down. If they still follow their plan laid out from the pandemic days, they’ll do an MP3 port after IV. So that is an opportunity to do a bundle or a Definitive Edition. Max Payne 1 & 2 remakes, and a Max Payne 3 port.”
While no official announcement has been made, this post suggests that Rockstar is potentially considering a GTA IV remaster, followed by a Max Payne 3 port—possibly bundled together as part of a larger Definitive Edition collection.
Why a 2025 Launch Makes Sense
With GTA 6 officially set for release in May 2026, re-releasing GTA 4 in 2025 could serve as a clever lead-in. The games are linked in subtle ways: GTA 4 is set in Liberty City, and Lucia, one of GTA 6’s protagonists, is canonically from there. Revisiting Niko Bellic’s story would provide a thematic bridge for players heading into the next major chapter of the franchise.

A Beloved, Story-Driven Classic
First released in 2008, Grand Theft Auto IV was a turning point for the series. It swapped out much of the franchise’s chaotic fun for a grittier, more narrative-focused approach, ditching the over-the-top rampages and focusing on emotional depth.
The story of Niko Bellic, an Eastern European immigrant trying to navigate crime, family, and the American Dream, remains one of Rockstar’s most respected narratives. The game also received critical acclaim for its physics, atmosphere, and realism—elements that could shine even brighter with current-gen enhancements.

Max Payne Also in the Pipeline
While this GTA IV remaster is still unofficial, we do know that Remedy Entertainment is actively working with Rockstar Games on remakes of Max Payne 1 and 2. A remaster of Max Payne 3 could follow, making 2025-2026 a big couple of years for fans of Rockstar’s classic titles.
For now, fans should treat this as a rumor, but if the leaks hold true, 2025 could be a nostalgic year for GTA fans—with Liberty City calling once more before we jump into the sun-soaked chaos of GTA 6 in 2026.
