Sonic the Hedgehog to Make a Surprise Comeback in Theaters This Christmas

Across three live-action films, Sonic the Hedgehog has solidified his status as a true movie star, raking in over $1.2 billion at the box office. A fourth installment is set for 2027, but fans won’t have to wait that long to see Sonic back on the big screen. A surprise announcement revealed that Sonic will make an unexpected appearance in the second trailer for The Angry Birds Movie 3.

While Sonic’s cameo in the upcoming Angry Birds film might catch some off guard, it aligns perfectly with corporate strategy. The trailer features a quick scene with Chuck, the banana-shaped bird voiced by Josh Gad, racing alongside Sonic. Given Chuck’s reputation as the fastest bird on Bird Island, a speed contest between these two iconic characters feels right at home. The specifics of how Sonic enters the Angry Birds universe remain a mystery, but it could be a dream sequence, a hallucination, or simply a humorous non sequitur, as the plot of an Angry Birds film often takes a backseat to physical comedy and playful gags.

From a business standpoint, the Sonic and Angry Birds crossover is a smart move. Sega acquired Rovio, the Finnish company behind the Angry Birds franchise, in 2023 for a staggering $775 million. Since then, Sonic and the Angry Birds have teamed up in several games, including Angry Birds 2, Angry Birds Friends, Sonic Dash, Sonic Forces: Speed Battle, and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.

The plot of The Angry Birds Movie 3 is straightforward: “This holiday season, one angry bird will face his greatest challenge yet, surviving fatherhood… while saving the world!” In essence, Jason Sudeikis’ character Red must balance parenting duties with fending off a new threat from the pesky pigs.

The voice cast for The Angry Birds Movie 3 includes Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Emma Myers, Rachel Bloom, Walker Scobell, Danny McBride, Marcello Hernández, Tim Robinson, Anna Cathcart, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Nikki Glaser, Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson, Salish Matter, Psalm West, Sam Richardson, James Austin Johnson, Lily James, and Keke Palmer.

Sonic fans can catch this exciting crossover when The Angry Birds Movie 3 hits theaters on December 23. The original Angry Birds Movie is currently available for streaming, while its sequel can be found on another platform.

Looking ahead, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is scheduled for release on March 19, 2027, and there’s also a mysterious Sonic spinoff planned for December 22, 2028. Metal Sonic is set to make a return in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
